For many years now, laser hair removal has been present in the market commercially and experimentally. A lot of dermatologists recommend laser hair removal instead of the traditional hair removal process like threading and waxing because of the dangers that could happen to the skin. But do you really know how laser hair removal works? Let’s discuss what happens behind all that rave and look deeper into the laser hair removal process.

Many people have the misconception that laser hair treatments only take one session to have that hair-free skin but for a fact, the laser hair removal process takes a relatively long time to achieve optimum results. Because our hair doesn’t have the same hair growth cycle, multiple treatment sessions are needed and the rest period in between sessions would mean that the laser hair removal process is rather long.

Let’s now discuss the laser hair removal process.

  • Because of the fact that the hair has different hair growth cycles, the practitioner would schedule you to multiple sessions to remove completely the unwanted hair.
  • The practitioner should do a patch test to figure out what machine setting of the laser system would be the best for your skin and hair type.
  • The practitioner may apply a topical cream or may let you take over the counter pain killers if you are worried about the pain you might feel during the treatment. Just keep in mind that with the initial sessions, discomfort can arise especially to the areas with thicker hairs.
  • Goggles should be provided by the practitioner to protect your eyes from the laser contact. Special types of goggles may be used if undergoing a facial hair removal treatment.
  • After all safety precautions are done, the laser light is now delivered through the laser hair removal system which the practitioner moves gently and slowly over the area of your unwanted hair.

The time of each treatment session depends on the size of the skin area being treated. If you are having your face treated, it may take 12-15 minutes, Legs may take approximately an hour each, the bikini area may take 20 minutes, and the chest and back area may be even longer.

If you are a good candidate for laser hair removal, you can see results only after a few sessions, but if you are not, do not be surprised if you would need additional treatments called “touch-ups”.

Knowing the laser hair removal process would give you information on what should happen in a laser hair removal treatment. It is always best to consult first with you practitioner and address any concerns to achieve the results you want to have.
